In the next few weeks, Zoox, Amazon’s self-driving division, plans to start operating several dozen autonomous robotaxis in Las Vegas and San Francisco. This was announced by co-founder and CTO Jesse Levinson at this week’s TechCrunch Disrupt conference in San Francisco.
Initially, Zoox employees will be able to use the service in the South of Market district in San Francisco and on the Las Vegas Strip. Levinson said Zoox has reached “the internal security readiness required to launch the service.” He also stated the following:
I can say that in the next few weeks, we’re actually going to have a couple dozen Zoox robotaxis across our Foster City, San Francisco and Las Vegas, geofences that will expand several fold over the next year. [..] And then, you know, 2026 is when we’re going to really start cranking out production vehicles at very large scale.
The vehicles are to be used during the 16 hours of the day with the most traffic. The company is also working with several hotels in Las Vegas to which the robotaxis will travel, and an Explorer program will also be available to early riders from the public.
